NBC Olympic Coverage Critic Guy Adams Had Twitter Account Suspended [UPDATE]

Twitter has suspended the account of British journalist Guy Adams (@guyadams), in the wake of his fierce criticism of NBC?s Olympic Coverage. Adams, the Los Angeles correspondent for Britain?s ?The Independent,? had a scathing stream of tweets about the network?s coverage, pointing out factual errors and asking if car advertising was an Olympic sport. It appears, however, to have been revealing the email address of NBC Universal?s ?President, NBC Olympics? Gary Zenkel that earned his account suspension.

It is not clear what rule Adams violated. Twitter has a policy against the release of someone?s ?private and confidential information,? but an email address does not seem to be on the same plane as a credit card number, a social security number or a street address. Twitter has a partnership with NBC Sports to promote the games, which likely explains the broad interpretation of the rule. It might also explain how ?#NBC? was a twitter trend but ?#NBCfail? was not.

Adams is purportedly publishing a piece in response to the banning. This is more horrendous PR for NBC and it?s only the fourth day.

UPDATE: Statement from NBC via Richard Deitsch

?We filed a complaint with Twitter because a user tweeted the personal information of one of our executives. According to Twitter, this is a violation of their privacy policy. Twitter alone levies discipline.?

UPDATE II: Statement from Guy Adams? email in the Independent.

?I?m of course happy to abide by Twitter?s rules, now and forever,? it reads. ?But I don?t see how I broke them in this case: I didn?t publish a private email address. Just a corporate one, which is widely available to anyone with access to Google, and is identical [in form] to one that all of the tens of thousands of NBC Universal employees share. It?s no more ?private? than the address I?m emailing you from right now. Either way, [it's] quite worrying that NBC, whose parent company are an Olympic sponsor, are apparently trying (and, in this case, succeeding) in shutting down the Twitter accounts of journalists who are critical of their Olympic coverage.?

(AP) ? Dinh Thi Hong Loan grasps her girlfriend's hand, and the two gaze into each other's love-struck eyes. Smiling, they talk about their upcoming wedding ? how they'll exchange rings and toast the beginning of their lives together.

The lesbians' marriage ceremony in the Vietnamese capital won't be officially recognized, but that could soon change. Vietnam's Communist government is now considering whether to allow same-sex couples to marry or legally register and receive rights ? positioning the country to be the first in Asia to do so.

"Our love for each other is real and nothing changes regardless of whether the law is passed or not," said Loan, 31. "But when it is passed, we will definitely go get registered. I can't wait!"

Even longtime gay-rights activists are stunned by the Justice Ministry's proposal to include same-sex couples in its overhaul of the country's marriage law. No one knows what form it will take or whether it will survive long enough to be debated before the National Assembly next year, but supporters say the fact that it's even being considered is a victory in a region where simply being gay can result in jail sentences or whippings with a rattan cane.

"I think everyone is surprised," said Vien Tanjung, an Indonesian gay-rights activist. "Even if it's not successful it's already making history. For me, personally, I think it's going to go through."

Vietnam seems an unlikely champion of gay-rights issues. It is routinely lambasted by the international community over its dismal human rights record, often locking up political dissidents who call for democracy or religious freedom. Up until just a few years ago, homosexuality was labeled as a "social evil" alongside drug addiction and prostitution.

And Vietnam's gay community itself was once so underground that few groups or meeting places existed. It was taboo to even talk about the issue.

But over the past five years, that's slowly started to change. Vietnam's state-run media, unable to write about politically sensitive topics or openly criticize the one-party government, have embraced the chance to explore gay issues. They have run lengthy newspaper stories and television broadcasts, including one live special that won a top award.

Video of Vietnam's first publicized gay wedding went viral online in 2010, and a few other ceremonies followed, capturing widespread public attention. The Justice Ministry now says a legal framework is necessary because the courts do not know how to handle disputes between same-sex couples living together. The new law could provide rights such as owning property, inheriting and adopting children.

"I think, as far as human rights are concerned, it's time for us to look at the reality," Justice Minister Ha Hung Cuong said Tuesday in an online chat broadcast on national TV and radio. "The number of homosexuals has mounted to hundreds of thousands. It's not a small figure. They live together without registering marriage. They may own property. We, of course, have to handle these issues legally."

Globally, 11 countries have legalized same-sex marriage since the Netherlands became the first to do so in 2001. Only a few U.S. states allow it, but President Barack Obama provided hope for many couples worldwide after announcing his support earlier this year.

The issue has remained largely off the table across Asia. In Thailand, many tourists see a vibrant gay, lesbian and transgender community, but it exists largely as part of the country's lucrative entertainment industry, separated from politics and conservative Thai society.

Muslim-dominated nations such as Indonesia have strict laws against homosexuality. Sodomy can result in up to 20 years in jail and caning in Malaysia. But that hasn't stopped some from continuing to fight for more rights and visibility.

In Singapore, more than 15,000 people ? double last year's turnout ? recently held up pink lights in a park at night to support acceptance of the community in a modern city-state where gay sex remains illegal, even though the law is not enforced.

In Taiwan, a 2003 bill to recognize same-sex marriage failed to receive enough support to make it law, though a lesbian couple is expected to tie the knot in August at a Buddhist monastery.

Vietnam will also hold its first public gay pride parade Aug. 5 in Hanoi. The country is socially conservative, but the government restricts the kind of politicized religious movements that typically push back against same-sex marriage in other countries. Gay pride events also seem to pose little threat to Communist Party's dominance.

The same-sex marriage proposal still has several hurdles before it could become law. The Justice Ministry will consider opinions from the public along with government agencies before submitting its draft proposal to the National Assembly next May on whether to recommend same-sex marriage or some other type of legal recognition with rights. Then, it must be approved by a majority of parliament.

"Some people told me if Vietnam could legalize it, it would be very good example for other counties to follow," said Le Quang Binh, head of the nonprofit Institute for Studies of Society, Economy and Environment, which is consulting on the marriage law. "People think that talking about it is a big step forward already. ... I hope it will lead to more openness or tolerance for gays and lesbians in Vietnam."

As for Vietnamese partners Loan and Nguyen Thi Chi, who share a one-room apartment down a narrow alley in Hanoi, they say their love and commitment is real, regardless of whether a law exists to recognize them when they marry next month. But they hope the new proposal will ease stigma that lingers around same-sex couples.

Chi, 20, knows the pain of discrimination all too well. She recently dropped out of college after being publicly outed by a note taped to one of her classroom doors saying she was "diseased." She was harassed and bullied for a year and a half on campus until finally deciding she'd had enough.

"Things must change," she said. "Even though it was not a nice experience, more and more people are interested in knowing about the community. And the more people that know about it, the more people will have a different view on it."

How to Move Your Brand from Invisible to Visible | Jeffbullas's Blog

Geoffrey Rush the Oscar winning actor said he has strived to accomplish two things in his life??Credibility and Visibility?.?How to Move from Invisible to Visible

If you are a job seeker then standing out is important in securing that next job.

Business owners and entrepreneurs need to be noticed to obtain funding and sell their products and services.

To succeed as a musician and artist your work obtains visibility as it is played, displayed and seen.

Authors have the challenge of writing a book that has to stand out in a mountain of 15 million books that will be published in 2012.

If you want to stand out, Seth Godin recommends ?Purple Cows?

Do something unique and different.

Pick Yourself

We live in an age where we have the means and the machines to self publish and self market. Technology is democratising publishing and marketing.

The Gutenberg press has been superseded by the digital press. The written word has been set free from the confines of time and space.

On a social web ?you don?t need to wait to be picked to publish. You can ?Pick ?yourself?.

No longer do authors have to pitch or beg a publisher. Amazon is providing the platform for self publishing.

The tools and technologies now allow you to publish short form content in an instant. That could be on Tumblr, Facebook or Google+.

Even your smart phone is a publishing machine in your pocket that can publish images and text whether that is on Instagram or Twitter.

Emulate then Innovate

Online video adds to the publishing mix which provides the means to communicate with all the power of face to face communication with all its associated subliminal messages.

The motivating power of face to face communications is not restricted to the boardroom or the town hall. YouTube is leveraging the transmission of skills that cannot be transmitted just with words.

You can?t show someone how to dance with text.

Video transmits the non verbal such as facial expressions, gestures, passion and eye contact where serious magic happens.

Reading and writing are fairly recent inventions whereas face to face communication has been honed by tens of thousands of years of evolution.

?What Gutenberg did for writing video is doing for face to face communications?.

Video enables people to view how something is done, then emulate and finally innovate.

Radical Openess

The hardest part though is being prepared to open up and expose yourself to the world. Content needs to be set free and giving away your secrets is part of this new paradigm of radical?openness!

Credibility is achieved through the display of your skills via your content whether it is carried by music, words or video. Visibility is achieved by building online tribes and followers and sharing with them ?your ideas.

So what can you do to stand out on a very crowded web?

1. Tap into your passions

Some ?people know from the first awakening of awareness, what they will do for the rest of their life. We all have an inkling of what we love. What keeps you up late at night, what do you read about, what makes you leap into your car and drive for hours?

This is your engine room.

2. Leverage your innate abilties

What are you good at? Reading, learning, loving, writing, video production, speaking, cooking or running? This is where you start. Along the way you will discover other skills that you didn?t know you had.

3. Build your Soapbox

This can be a Facebook page, Google+, Tumblr or a WordPress blog. My pulpit of choice is WordPress technology, with my own domain and self hosted. It is mine, I own it and I have control.

I like that.

Don?t ?hand over the keys of your content hub and home to a social network ?that can banish you without an explanation.

Some people have made their home on a Facebook page or Google+. If you are removed (and it has happened and regularly) then I can only wish you good luck in calling their help line.

4. Start

This is where the rubber hits the road.

I remember reading a blog post on Hubspot and it said even if you aren?t exactly clear on what you should be publishing ?.just start. This could be writing, creating YouTube videos, posting fashion photos, Publishing images of your art, paper folding or infographics.

In short create content. Don?t wait for the design and branding to be perfect. The refinement can happen on the journey as the crowd tells you what works and what doesn?t.

Just do it!

The magic is in the movement.

5.?Know your audience

Understand the persona of the audience(s)who you are targeting.Don?t over complicate this, the audience will become clearer over time. You will hear their voice and see their shadows. You will sense what they want.

Just listen.

6. Educate

?How to? articles are always popular. It is the fastest growing category on YouTube. Educate with stories.?A story?s power is twofold. It provides knowledge of how to act and inspiration which is the motivation to act.

Don?t underestimate people?s desire to learn.

7. Inform

In your target niche people want to know what is happening. Keep them up to date with the latest facts, figures and news. Articles that provide insights into the latest industry news will keep your audience coming back for more.

8. Inspire

Show people the potential to change their life and show them a future with potential and let them know that dreams can come true.

A vision is vital.

7.?Stay on topic

We are all tempted to go off on tangents. You need to keep asking yourself ?does my audience want to read about this?. You can try new angles but the crowd will tell you via the retweets, Google plus ones, shares, likes and comments what they like and don?t like.

Focus is vital.

8. Keep it ?simple

As you build knowledge through researching, reading and creating you will be hit with the ?Curse of Knowledge?.

?The better we get at generating great ideas?new insights and novel solutions?in our field of expertise, the more unnatural it becomes for us to communicate those ideas clearly. That?s why knowledge is a curse.?

So keep the message simple and clear of ?industry speak? and acronyms.

9. Market and promote everywhere

Create a brand and presence on the large vibrant social networks. Publish and promote your content from your blog to as many social network platforms as time and resources allow.

Be ?ubiquitous?

10. Build for search engines

Google with its latest updates called ?Panda? and ?Penguin? is valuing unique content that receives social votes, whether that is a ?plus one? on Google, a ?Like? on Facebook or a retweet on Twitter. Use WordPress plugins like ?SEO all in one? or ?Yoast? that create search engine friendly titles, descriptions and tags that make it easy for Google to crawl your site and show up in search engine results.

11. Build your tribes

Tap into the power of reciprocation. Follow people on Twitter and they will follow you back (some of the time). The great content on your homebase (blog) and the essential engagement with your followers will help you build a tribe. Be real and be willing to show the human side of your self.

Open the hood and reveal your secrets and the tribe will leap in.

12. Communicate with multi-media

Everyone learns differently. The younger generation prefers a short video. Baby boomers would rather read an article. The LinkedIn types like powerpoint presentations on Slideshare.

Provide the same content in a variety of media.

13. Hone your writing skills

If you want to write then you need to ?read?. Writing can be learned. The basics are vocabulary, tempting headlines and well structured articles.

Tempting visuals (eg Infographics) will add a little bit of content contagion.

14. Be relentless

I can?t stress too much how important this is. Producing content once a month isn?t going to cut it. It is like flying plane.

Full throttle for takeoff until you reach cruising altitude.

?How About You

Are you visible online? What has worked for you in getting attention? Is it video or is it writing articles and blog posts?

Have you tapped into the power of writing great headlines? Do you need to build a larger and more engaged tribe.

Look forward to hearing your stories.

The Dark Knight Rises Movie Review

Despite a clunky opening and impossibly high expectations, The Dark Knight Rises is absolutely incredible.

The final chapter in director Christopher Nolan?s epic Batman series, the Dark Knight Rises picks up 8 years after the end of the Dark Knight with Gotham City enjoying reasonably crime free streets thanks to the Dent Act, a piece of legislation that helps ease the prosecution of criminals named for the martyred Harvey Dent. Batman has not been seen since he took the rap for Dent?s crimes at the end of TDK and alter ego Bruce Wayne (Christian Bale) has become a recluse. In his absence, Wayne Enterprises has moved closer and closer into financial trouble and finds itself on the edge of a more hostile than it looks like takeover. Things in Gotham are boiling just under the surface and a new threat has emerged in the form of mercenary Bane (Tom Hardy) and a mysterious and beautiful cat burglar, Selina Kyle (Anne Hathaway), who breaks into Wayne manner and steals Bruce?s Mom?s pearls as well as his finger prints. After a visit from police Offer John Blake (Joseph Gordon-Levitt) who has figured out his secret identity, Bruce realizes it is time to get back into the world both as Bruce Wayne for his company and Batman for the people of Gotham. He looks to Miranda Tate (Marion Cotillard) to help save the company and takes to the streets to find Bane. And then things go horribly wrong.

Given how well received and truly great the Dark Knight was, the Dark Knight Rises is going to be polarizing for a lot of fans. This movie is not the second coming of TDK nor is it ever really the same sort of movie in the first place. TDK was fundamentally a crime movie and fit snugly into that genre. It was Heat by way of a caped vigilante and a psychotic clown and it worked enormously? well thanks in no small part to Heath Ledger?s incredible performance as the Joker. TDKR starts off looking like it is going to be another one of those movies replacing the organized crime angle with corporate espionage and the stock market and then it turns into a full on war film. It becomes Red Dawn if the Gotham City police were the Wolverines or the Siege if Bruce Willis were a ?roided out madman with a respirator on his head. This is a very sharp right turn and if your expectations are that you want TDK all over again with new villains you are going to be disappointed. If, however, you love really great action movies and meditations on power and responsibility for everyone and not just guys in animal costumes as well as other such deep themes then you are going to find an amazing film.

Compared to the previous two films, there is pound for pound less Batman here. The story focuses not just on one character?s struggle but the struggle of several including a good deal of focus on John Blake, Commissioner Gordon (Gary Oldman)and a fair amount for Selina Kyle. The way the story is structured, however, it doesn?t feel like Batman is being ignored at all but rather gives extra focus on what influence a symbol like Batman can have on people in times of crisis. As a man, Batman can be beaten and broken but as an idea he can inspire and motivate. This was a running theme throughout both of the previous films and finds a satisfying culmination here. That is not to say there is no place for Batman and his story arc is just as compelling and engaging as all the other characters.

Often times films like this are only as good as their villain. This seems doubly true off the heels of Legder?s Oscar winning performance in the last film.? The? villain we are given here is Bane and it is foolish to expect another Joker like performance? because the character calls for something much different and Tom Hardy steps up to the plate and knocks it out of the park. Sure, his voice is kind of weird and the volume through the mask is almost absurdly loud but there is more to the performance than that. You have to believe this is a man who Batman might not be able to beat both physically and strategically and who is intimidating enough to strike fear in the hearts of pretty much everyone in the city. He has to be big enough of a presence to keep people in line just by existing. Tom Hardy manages to do just that through posture, body language and physique. He doesn?t spend a lot of time pontificating and making speeches but what he says is pretty much always important and always drives the point home that he is in control and he has more power than anyone else. And he backs it up with his plan and with his actions. Bane is easily the most dangerous villain in the series and manages to exude that in every scene he is in and his influence is felt even in the scenes in which he is not.

Bane?s presence and the overall stakes of the film require it to be a much darker and more dramatic movie and it is. There is not a lot of humor going on and before the climax the desperation reaches fever pitch. Because of this the action scenes tend to be less about exhilarating spectacle and more about intensity and I feel like it would be very hard not to be swept up in the wave of tension and suspense at the end about how things will play out. The ending, for me, was very satisfying and represents a shining moment in long form storytelling in which the destination is absolutely worth the journey to get there.

The performances were phenomenal across the board here. Anyone doubting Anne Hathaway?s ability to pull off Catwoman should find themselves well satisfied. Joseph Gordon-Levitt again proves why he is one of the most engaging actors working today. Michael Caine absolutely kills it in just about every scene in which he appears. Gary Oldman provides a sturdy backbone throughout most of the film and shines much more brightly than in the previous films. Christian Bale eases back on the throttle a bit with his Batman voice and gives us much less Cookie Monster and a much more understandable Batman. As Bruce Wayne he gives us a man who found nothing to go back to after hanging up the cowl and who must overcome physical, emotional and mental damage to once again do what is needed. This is easily Bale?s best work in the series both in and out of the batsuit and he makes you really feel the struggle the character is going through.

There are some nitpicky problems here and there, most of which I can?t really get into without spoilers but taken as a whole experience none of them really matter that much. Once you get through the clunky first 25 minutes or so, once the movie engages and grabs you only the most cynical and pernicious of fanboys will care about these nitpicks. Some of them fall in the realm of ?holy shit this movie is 15 minutes shy of three hours we have to cut that detail out? and some of them have to do with handling of characters from the comic. I am personally not going to sweat any of these comic book details simply because this series is not the comics and that division was made a long time ago. The motivations of characters from the comics are not necessarily the motivations of the characters here. Looking at the film as a separate entity, the characters are what they are supposed to be.

Conclusion [9.5 out of 10]

The Dark Knight Rises is not a perfect movie but it is a great one. It is hard not to recommend it across the board but given how grim and dark it is with the ferocious intensity it is important to consider the content when taking kids to it. This earns it?s rating and it might be too much for small children. Likewise, if you don?t manage your expectations and understand that this movie is not TDK no matter how much you want it to be, there is a real danger of disappointment. Aside from those issues, the movie is smart, powerful, dramatic and important. Cut it some slack for its first 25 minutes and you will be in for a terrific film.

Internet providers better at giving advertised speeds: FCC

An annual report card on how well Internet service providers meet or exceed advertised broadband speeds has placed Verizon Communications and Cablevision Systems at the top of the class.

Overall, the 13 top U.S. broadband providers, representing four-fifths of all U.S. landline broadband connections, are coming much closer to consistently delivering their advertised speeds, the Federal Communications Commission said on Thursday.

U.S. broadband speeds on average are within 90 percent of what they promote, up from within 80 percent when the FCC issued its initial report last year.

Related story: 1 in 5 US adults not online ? are they truly not interested?

FCC analysis concluded that the improvements were mostly due to greater investments and upgrades to broadband networks, not downward adjustments in advertised speeds.

Broadband customers, on average, subscribed to faster speed tiers and experienced actual speeds nearly 38 percent faster than a year ago, the FCC said. Consumers spent more time online and using more data-intensive services, like video streaming, the agency added.

During peak consumer usage hours when networks are busiest, actual download speeds varied from 120 percent to 79 percent of advertised speed among the different ISPs.

Verizon's fiber network, Cablevision, Comcast, Mediacom Communications and Charter Communications all routinely delivered nearly 100 percent or greater of the speed advertised, even during the hours of highest demand, the FCC said. (NBCUniversal is a subsidiary of Comcast.)

Cablevision had been last year's worst performer, delivering just 54 percent of its advertised speed during peak hours.

Frontier Communications was at the bottom of the pack in the latest FCC report, but it still delivered 79 percent of advertised performance, reflecting the general improvement.

Frontier spokeswoman Christy Reap said the company tripled its size two years ago to cover more rural areas, and has, and will, continue to make investments to increase speed and capacity.

The FCC said the U.S. market is moving toward the agency's goal of having at least 100 million homes with affordable access to actual download speeds of at least 50 megabits per second by 2015, and 100 Mbps by 2020, the FCC said.

Actual speeds experienced by consumers increased to 14.6 Mbps from 10.6 Mbps a year ago, according to the report. Speeds from 1 Mbps to 2 Mbps are used to stream standard video, while consumers wanting to watch full high-definition video online need speeds upwards of 5 Mbps.

More testing to be done
The FCC said it will conduct more testing this fall and release another report by the end of the year.

"To realize the full power of broadband's potential, we must continue to see increases in broadband speed and capacity and decreases in per gigabit costs," FCC Chairman Julius Genachowski said.

The ISPs in the FCC study, ranked by performance as a percentage of advertised speed, were:

  • Verizon's fiber network (120 percent)
  • Cablevision (120 percent)
  • Comcast (103 percent)
  • Mediacom (100 percent)
  • Charter (98 percent)
  • Time Warner Cable (96 percent)
  • Cox Communications (95 percent)
  • Insight Communications (92 percent)
  • CenturyLink Inc (89 percent)
  • AT&T (87 percent)
  • Verizon's DSL network (87 percent)
  • Windstream (84 percent)
  • Qwest Communications (83 percent)
  • Frontier (79 percent)

Reactions to the 64th annual Primetime Emmy Awards nominations announced Thursday in Los Angeles:

"I think I'll set a trend here and we'll see a lot of people wearing pajamas next year." ? Jimmy Kimmel, who wore pajamas to announce the Emmy nominations live on TV and whose show, "Jimmy Kimmel Live!" was nominated for outstanding variety program.

"Popsicles after school. I'll go pick up my husband. He's got the day off. It's really hot here, so we'll go to this really great ice cream, Popsicle shop. That will be my celebration. I'll toast the Emmy nomination with a chocolate Popsicle. I know it doesn't sound great, but they're amazing. There's another one that's a peanut butter pecan Popsicle."? Nicole Kidman, nominated for her starring role in the TV movie "Hemingway & Gellhorn," speaking from Nashville, Tenn., on how she plans to celebrate.

"I have had the shriekiest morning of my life. I literally feel like I got asked to the prom and engaged and told I was going to the moon all in one day. Not to be too dramatic." ? Lena Dunham, nominated for writing, directing and starring in the comedy "Girls."

"It's insane. I can't believe it. And we're the show that's been there, too. That's weird, too. I can't believe we are on the air." ? "Mad Men" creator Matthew Weiner on the show's 17 nominations.

"I was a little nervous, and then I walked past my phone this morning and noticed it blinking. I had a text from Julie Bowen that said 'wowie,' so I thought it can't be that bad. We're at least at a 'wowie'-level of excitement here. ... If you put a numerical value on that, a 'wow' would be an eight or a nine, and 'wowie' is probably in the teens." ? "Modern Family" executive producer Christopher Lloyd on the show's 14 nominations.

"We're going to have a really glamorous life. Our buses are going to link up in the parking lot and that's where we'll be." ? Kevin Costner, who is on tour with his band in Oklahoma, on how he plans to celebrate his Emmy nod for his starring role in "Hatfields & McCoys."

"My daughter heads out to camp tomorrow, so there's going to be a lot of packing involved. We have to get up early and get to the airport. That's what my day will be. I'm sure I will be talking to a lot of people. I just got a text from Kevin Costner, and me and Mare (Winningham) just traded an email. It'll be nice to talk to people. These things are acknowledgments and for the actor, an opportunity to get another job maybe." ? Bill Paxton, nominated for his lead role alongside Costner in "Hatfields & McCoys."

"I was pretending to sleep. It wasn't going very well. I instructed everyone to not call me because I didn't want any condolence calls. I didn't want to pick them up thinking it was an exciting call, only to find out ? waah, waah ? it didn't happen. Then, my manager called me, and I screamed a lot. A lot. With great excitement." ? Sarah Paulson, nominated for her supporting role in the TV movie "Game Change."

"I was lying in bed and couldn't sleep and feeling foolish for not being able to. I'm lying there thinking it feels so good to get nominated, I'm hoping this isn't the year it all ends. You never know. Is this the year we're gonna get shut out? A little bit of hope can drive you crazy. It never gets old. You never get tired of waking up to news like this." ? Vince Gilligan, executive producer of "Breaking Bad," on the show's 13 nominations.

"I'm in Hawaii right now, and I woke up in the middle of the night, just because I always wake up in the middle of the night, and I looked at my iPhone and saw we were nominated for eight Emmys, and I was able to go right back to sleep." ? Brian Grazer, nominated for producing the 84th annual Academy Awards.

"Right now I just have mimosas sort of swimming around in front of my eyes but I haven't actually managed to get a hold of one, so I think I need to go and put that right, and maybe a little champagne brunch. I have my family with me and my two small children, so as long as I can drink alcohol and keep them alive for the remainder of the day, that will be a job well done." ? Damian Lewis, nominated for his lead role on "Homeland."

"Even the thought of that makes me nervous." ? Loretta Devine, nominated for her guest-starring role on "Grey's Anatomy," on what she might wear to the ceremony.

"I really am flying. I know there are a lot of wonderful and profound actors out there who really do focus on their work so I know how special this moment is for me because I've seen them, I've watched them, I respect them and they all walk through it, they put their heart and soul into everything that they do and so I look at them and I am really, really honored to be regarded in the same vein because that's how I work. I'm on cloud nine." ? Giancarlo Esposito, nominated for his supporting role on "Breaking Bad."

"I'm so excited to have been nominated for an Emmy, especially for '30 Rock,' which is an incredible show, and also for playing a deranged and deceased world dictator who has divided the small country of my origin in two. That's the best part. I think that's what I'd call Iron Curtain irony." ? Margaret Cho, nominated for her guest-starring role as Kim Jong-il.

Police: Mom hacks computer to change grades

By Louis Casiano, NBC News

A Pennsylvania mother went to great?lengths to see her children succeed when she logged into a school district's computer system to change their grades, state police and school officials say.

Catherine Venusto, 45, admitted to using password information obtained while employed as a secretary for the Northwestern Lehigh School District to log onto the computer system on multiple occasions, according to authorities.?

Using district?superintendent?Dr. Mary Anne Wright's sign-on and password, she changed a failing grade for her daughter to a medical exception in 2010 and bumped up a grade of 98 to a 99 for her son in?February, authorities said.?

She used also Wright's information gain access to emails and personnel files, assistant?superintendent?Jennifer Holman told NBC News.

Authorities said Venusto also used employee passwords to access the district's human resource system.

Venusto told police she logged into the?system?out of "curiosity"?and "boredom," according to court records, The Morning Call reported. ?

The investigation began in February when Holman reported that a former employee had used the Wright's password and username to gain access into the district's computer system.?

"We had a pretty good idea (identity of employee) because of the grades that were changed," Holman told NBC News.

A teacher at district high school told the principal she had seen Wright's name as logging into an electronic gradebook system, Holman said.

After district officials contacted Wright to inquire about her viewing student grades, she ordered a shutdown of the district's computer system.

"At the time, I didn't quite have a grasp of the scope of what happened, but I was immediately concerned for protected information," Wright said. "We shut down the system within three hours of learning there was a potential problem."

As a secretary, Venusto's duties included creating sign-in and passwords for Wright and several other employees, the Morning Call reported.?

Holman said she left her secretary job of six years in 2011 in good standing for a position with another school district before going to work for QVC, an online shopping network, according to a news release by the Lehigh County District Attorney's Office.?

The release said an investigation found Venusto logged into the district's computer system more than 100 times using Wright's password.?

Venusto used three different Internet-provider addresses, one from her home, the East Penn School District and another associated with QVC, to log onto the system, the news release said.?

"We deeply regret this incident and that this?unauthorized?access?occurred, and we?sincerely?regret any?inconvenience?this may cause," Wright said in a statement posted on the district's website.

Holman said no evidence was found suggesting employee personal information was compromised or used for illegal purposes. She told NBC News that the grades for Venusto's children were the only ones changed.?

She has been charged with three counts of unlawful use of a computer and three counts of computer?trespass, according to court records.?

She was released on $30,000 bail Wednesday.?

Police said she admitted her actions were unethical but said they were not illegal.?

Put my kid in career-tech class? Parents resist

Oklahoma Department of Career and Technology Education / Tom Fields

A student at Oklahoma's Ardmore High School works on an assignment for a biotechnical program, which is designed to introduce students to careers in fields like chemistry and microbiology.

By Sarah Butrymowicz, The Hechinger Report

SAN DIEGO -- Career and technical education has come a long way since the days when students could be steered from academics into hairstyling, auto repairs or carpentry. But that doesn?t mean it?s easy to sell the concept of having all students take courses in CTE, as it is known.

Take what happened this March in La Jolla, Calif. Parents rose in protest after the San Diego Unified School District ?proposed new high school graduation requirements mandating two years of career and technical education courses ? or two to four courses. The district would have been the first in the nation to have such a mandate, experts believe. Parents circulated an online protest petition and school officials spent hours in a meeting to assure hundreds of parents that courses like computerized accounting, child development and website design could be in the best interest of all students.

But afterward, when parent leaders asked the crowd who favored the requirement, every single parent at the meeting voted against it. ?

District officials were unprepared for the backlash in the affluent neighborhoods north of Interstate 8, the unofficial boundary between the haves and have-nots of the district. Just two years earlier, the school system passed a mandate ? supported by the community ? to make all students complete a set of courses required for entry to one of the state?s university systems.

They viewed career and technical education courses as a logical extension of their goal to get all students ?college and career ready,? said Sid Salazar, the district?s assistant superintendent for instructional support services. Attending college was once the sole way students could prepare for some professions, but opportunities now exist in high school under an expanded definition of career and technical education.

The parents, though, argued that college-bound students wouldn?t be helped by taking career and technical education classes. As one parent wrote on an online petition that garnered 1,326 signatures in 21 days: ?If you force the children of ? highly intelligent and very academic parents to take less-rigorous VoTech coursework, you will hurt their chances of admission to undergrad and grad school.?

Advocates: It's prep for engineering
As San Diego demonstrated, despite more than a decade of efforts to revamp its image, technical education still battles a negative reputation. While college-prep graduation requirements are spreading rapidly in California, many affluent parents, and low-income parents who fear their child is being sold short, balk at technical education and assume it won?t lead to college.

Advocates are trying to convince people it?s not an either-or situation. They argue that although many career and technical fields do not require more than a certificate or an associate?s degree, CTE courses can be useful even to those on the four-year university path, including students preparing for professions like teaching and engineering. ?

A statewide program mandates that kids in Georgia choose their career as early as 6th grade, but some say that's too early for children to know what they want to do for a living. NBC's Rehema Ellis reports.

Advocates also point to data from the U.S. Department of Education demonstrating that those who concentrate in career and technical education classes in high school are more likely to graduate from high school: 90 percent earned their diploma in the 2007-2008 school year, compared with about 75 percent overall. And nearly 80 percent of those students enroll in post-secondary education within two years of high school graduation.

?There?s always been a saying in the field that public attitude toward career and technical education ? and I think this is accurate ? (is) it?s great but for someone else?s kids,? said Kenneth Gray, an emeritus professor of education at Penn State, who has written extensively about the role of career and technical courses in high school. ?I?m convinced that for a whole lot of people, they would much rather have their kid go to Yale and turn out to be a bum than go into career and technical education and be successful.?

Gray added, however, that mandating it for all was not a solution. ?To say everyone has to take it is as ridiculous in my view as saying everyone has to take calculus,? he said.

Last year, the National Association of State Directors of Career Technical Education Consortium hired an outside communications firm and launched its second major PR move in as many decades. The new publicity campaign aims to demonstrate CTE?s links to college and the workforce. But when Kimberly Green, the consortium?s executive director, performs her personal litmus test?chatting with people on airplanes about her job?she still gets a similar response: ?I?m so glad people have a place to go that?s not ? college.?

?I wouldn?t say the tide has turned,? she said. ?The label is still a barrier.?

It?s not the only issue. Many San Diego parents worried about the limited amount of time in the school day, a problem even the staunchest technical education proponents recognize. ?

?It?s not that we were against the career technical courses themselves, we were against making them a requirement,? said Fran Shrimp, a parent leader in San Diego who organized the petition against mandating the courses. ?Getting accepted into a good college is so competitive that students need to pack their schedules with the most challenging courses available just to be in the running.?

Changing with workforce needs
Vocational education ? as it used to be called ? was a means of tracking students who were not going to college. A generation ago, that education enabled grads to enter the middle class with just a high school diploma. In the 1970s and ?80s, the economy began requiring more skilled workers and middle-class America became more convinced of the importance of college, said Anthony Carnevale, director of the Georgetown University Center on Education and the Workforce. By the mid-1980s, the arguments against tracking flourished and the calls of ?college for all? began.

About 10 years ago, responding to the changing economy and attempting to shed its bad reputation, vocational education became career and technical education. But advocates are still trying to cement the name change into the American lexicon. ?Career and technical education meant something different than vocational education,? Green said. ?It?s academics plus technical instruction.?

The quality and availability of the programs vary. At the top end, students in medical courses might spend time at a hospital, learning key vocabulary and technical skills like drawing blood. Students can learn engineering design programs on computers or spend time taking apart electronics to learn how they work. Students in cosmetology programs might study the chemistry behind hair dye.

Information technology, marketing and business management all fall under technical education?s new wide umbrella, as do professions like engineering and architecture. Even the old standards, like auto shop, require a level of academics not needed in the past to keep up with increasingly computerized car engines, Green said.

At Patrick Henry High School in San Diego, if students pass all three pre-engineering courses offered, they?ll be automatically admitted into San Diego State?s engineering program. At the high school?s teaching academy, students work with nursery school children and graduate with just two community college credits shy of earning a preschool teacher?s license.

San Diego district officials held up programs like these as examples and argued that more than 90 percent of students were already taking at least one of the 158 technical education courses the district offered. And 60 of them were approved by the state university systems to count toward college admission.

'Why change it?'
The parents were not swayed, concerned about having time in their children?s schedules for electives and Advanced Placement courses. ?If the program is successful on its own, why change it?? Shrimp said. She also noted that the same set of CTE courses are not offered at each high school, meaning students might be relegated to classes that don't interest them.

Within a month of meeting with parents in La Jolla, the San Diego Board of Education voted to rescind the requirements. ?

Scott Himelstein, director of the University of San Diego?s Center for Education Policy and Law and former deputy secretary of Education for California, viewed the vote as a ?major setback.? ?Policymakers need to gather the political courage to start promoting career and technical education, given that only a quarter of high schoolers in the state will go on to get a four-year degree, he said. Nationally, more than 30 percent of adults have at least a bachelor?s degree, according to census figures.

One compromise, according to Himelstein, is to approve more career and technical courses to count toward the University of California and California State University systems? so-called ?a-g? entry requirements. This list of courses, which San Diego and several other districts have adopted as graduation requirements, spell out what courses students must complete in high school to be eligible for admittance to the universities, including core subjects like math and English, as well as a certain number of electives.

The university systems approve courses on an individual basis, meaning each district?s biology or calculus course must get a separate approval. Ten years ago, no career and technical classes were approved for a-g, according to Gary Hoachlander, president of ConnectEd, a California group that works with nine districts to create career-oriented high school and college trajectories for students. Now, there are some 10,000 a-g courses across all the state?s districts.

The vast majority count as electives. ?Often career and technical science classes, such as environmental science or agricultural science, won?t count as an a-g science credit. ?That?s where I think there?s still a lot of work to do,? Hoachlander said.

Summer Olympic Video Game Review Roundup | Gear Diary

The Olympic video game genre always offers unique sporting events players cannot usually find in other sport games. Newer consoles with motion controllers have thankfully reduced some stress from the all button mashing while sharpening the graphics from our first Olympic game experiences. My first experience was on the Apple IIc where the arrow buttons and timing the shortcut keys for the action was everything. Michael Anderson tried 2006 Torino Games (winter Olympics) on PC and he?s been scared to try one ever since.

Check out an upcoming fitness training game featuring Olympic athletes plus reviews of recent summer Olympic video games.

Even if you are not training for the Olympics authentic and authorized technical sports-training program, adidas miCoach brings a whole new level of interactivity to your training regime with over 400 exercises. This game uses full body optical tracking via the PlayStation 3 with PlayStation Move (required) and Xbox 360 with Kinect (required). This game incorporates dumbbells and stability ball and tests player reaction times. Train with 18 total characters on-disc and via downloadable content including Kaka, Dwight Howard, Manuel Neuer, Jose Mourinho, Will Genia and Eric Berry plus Olympians Ana Ivanovic (tennis), Andrea Petkovic (tennis), Fernando Verdaso (tennis), Jessica Ennis (track & field) and Tyson Gay (track & field).

Players can view their statistics, log activity and manage schedules and plans from web-capable devices. Look for incorporated capabilities like the add a cardio program that use the adidas miCoach smartphone app, miCoach Pacer or miCoach SPEED_CELL (sold separately). Gameplay expands nicely with special social networks, updates, and communities. Players earn Fit Points and awards for each activity. Adidas miCoach releases on July 24, 2012 for a suggested retail price of $39.99.

This year?s London 2012 Olympics video games including the official London 2012 game from SEGA of America ? available on Xbox 360 (with Kinect capabilities), PC and PlayStation 3 (with PlayStation Move capabilities). Game modes include single player Olympic Games mode, online and offline multiplayer and party play.

Over 30 Olympic events have been authentically recreated in their official Olympic arenas while the competition truly goes worldwide for the first time with global leaderboards for individual players and their corresponding nation. I rented the PlayStation 3 version (***), which was easy-to-control and had logical functions.

The graphics were impressive, but the events needed more variety and load times were frequent and a bit long at times. The PlayStation Move capabilities add great appeal and provide nice fitness challenges though developers can definitely spend more time incorporating this motion control option in improved ways. The visuals and overall presentation impresses plus the game works well for all age players who can ?pick-up-and-play? any time.

Nintendo Wii and Nintendo 3DS console owners can try Mario & Sonic at the London 2012 Olympics with 4-player or two-player versus play across most events. This version features competitive gameplay with the familiar characters from the Nintendo and SEGA franchises. This game has a full single player story mode and incorporates the setting in the host city, London, England. Events include the 100m sprint, aquatics, table tennis, and gymnastics along with four new events: horse-riding, canoeing, soccer and badminton.

I rented the Wii version (***1/2), which contains a huge mini-game cache, great multiplayer gameplay and the fantastic arcade style ?dream games? where players achieve their potential, literally, amid fantastic situations where performance equals player effort.

The special ?London Party Mode? also supports to four players and serves as the game?s party mode where players compete to fill up sticker sheets amid sports incorporating many famous London landmarks. A great physical workout with a fun variety of familiar events with entertaining additions and variations.

One more Olympic game competitor was Summer Stars 2012. I tried the demo on PlayStation 3 (via download on the PlayStation Network) and the graphics were impressive and the gameplay required quick reflexes and rapid actions. Play modes include career, free play (running, throwing, jumping, aquatics, archery, trampolining, mountain biking and foil fencing), and missions amid single and multiplayer (two to four players) with split screen option.

The different control schemes made gameplay difficult at times, but the interactive tutorials help and the achievements can keep players goal oriented in their play. Individual play takes a backseat here with no character customization though players learn more about the sport and event sequence in the cutscenes.? The visual environments and player animation contain noticeable clipping issues where competitors went right through objects. Also available on Wii and Xbox 360 (with Kinect capabilities).

Enjoy the Olympics!
