Retirement Planning: Should I name my spouse or my living trust as ...

So, the question becomes who do I name as the primary beneficiary and who do I name as the contingent beneficiary. ?In its most simplistic form you could do either of the following:

? ? Primary Beneficiary: your spouse

? ? Contingent Beneficiary: your living trust

? ? or

? ? Primary Beneficiary: your living trust

? ? Contingent Beneficiary: your spouse

Either way will provide flexibility after your death.

The main tax benefit of your spouse being the recipient of your retirement plans is that she can roll over the proceeds into her own IRA and continue the income tax deferral until she reaches ger required beginning date. ?Upon her death, structured properly, any remaining funds can be stretched out over the life expectancy of her named beneficiaries.
